For our honeymoon, I wanted a little bit of everything.\u00a0 I wanted to be able to experience the beach, the mountains, a city and plenty of culture.\u00a0 After much indecision, Joy and I settled on Southeast Asia and purchased our flights to Bangkok, Thailand.\u00a0 While the planning went well, the political situation in Thailand didn’t.\u00a0 A month prior to our departure a kind of civil war broke out with Bangkok turning into a war zone.\u00a0 A week prior to our leaving the government had appeared to have regained control.\u00a0 Joy and I decided to go forward with our plans.<\/p>\n

Our plans consisted of 4 distinct segments:\u00a0 the city, the ruins, the beach, the jungle.\u00a0 Before the fun could begin, we first had to get to Bangkok.\u00a0 We departed on a dreary Birmingham morning.\u00a0 After arriving in Houston, our 14 hour flight to Tokyo began.\u00a0 An 8 hour flight to Bangkok and we had arrived.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the city remained under a military curfew and the airport would be our home for the next 18 hours…<\/p>\n

Finally, our wait was over.\u00a0 After a\u00a0two hour flight, we landed in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.\u00a0 A bit of a transient city, Kuala Lumpur is host to a multitude of cultures.\u00a0 We spent our time in the city exploring the city center located around the Petronas Towers and by visiting Batu Caves.<\/p>\n

For our second adventure, we visited the Angkor Wat temple complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia.\u00a0 The temples date back to the 12th century and form one of the largest temple complexes in the world.<\/p>\n

Returning to Thailand, we arrived in Phuket before taking a ferry to Ko Phi Phi Don island.\u00a0 The island features white sand beaches surrounded by limestone cliffs.\u00a0 Maya beach is located on the nearby Ko Phi Phi Leh is known as “The Beach” after being featured in the movie of the same name.<\/p>\n

To conclude our trip, we took a 3 hour bus ride to Khao Sok National Park.\u00a0 We spent our first night in a tree-house resort after taking\u00a0an afternoon walk through the jungle.\u00a0 The next day we enjoyed an elephant ride before taking a boat to a bamboo hut village.\u00a0 The area was a true jungle paradise and without a doubt one of the most beautiful places I will ever visit.<\/p>\n

Overall the our honeymoon was everything we had hoped for.\u00a0 The sights were beautiful and the people throughout Southeast Asia were incredibly warm hearted and inviting.\u00a0 We never felt in any danger and received repeated help from the locals.\u00a0 I would encourage anyone that has a chance to visit the region.\u00a0 Sure the airline ticket is costly but it is offset by the strength of the dollar.\u00a0 Mid-tier hotel rooms can be had for $40 with sit down meals averaging around $3.\u00a0 While I hope that you can enjoy in our experience, my ultimate goal would be that it inspires you to explore the world around you.
